Why are Motorcycle Crash Injuries More-Severe than Car Crash Injuries?
Motorcycle injuries are significantly more severe than injuries in car accidents because motorcyclists lack the protective features of a passenger vehicle, such as airbags and a metal frame.
This lack of protection increases the motorcyclist’s vulnerability, increasing the risk of severe injuries like traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord damage, and paralysis. Statistics show that motorcyclists are far more likely to sustain serious or fatal injuries and require intensive medical care compared to car occupants.
Why Motorcycle Injuries Are More Severe
Lack of Protection: Unlike cars, motorcycles offer no structural protection, leaving the rider exposed to the full force of the impact.
Vulnerability on the Road: Motorcyclists are more easily ejected from their bikes and can suffer direct contact with the pavement, other vehicles, and roadside hazards.
Increased Risk of Catastrophic Injuries: The lack of protection directly contributes to higher rates of severe injuries. These injuries can include:
- Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
- Spinal Cord Injuries, leading to paralysis
- Compound fractures
- Severe road rash and burns
- Severed limbs
- Facial and other disfigurement
Statistics on Injury Severity
Roughly 80% of motorcycle accidents result in either an injury or a fatality, according to the National Traffic Safety Administration. The NTSA also reports that motorcyclists are up to 26 times more likely to be killed in an accident than passenger vehicle occupants.
A study in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found motorcyclists were three times more likely to suffer severe injuries and ten times more likely to require intensive care.
